Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko – Champions Defined

There is more than one way to become a champion, a winner and the best you can be in your chosen sport or career, but for me, after all the blows, jabs and body punches unleashed by fierce fists, it’s how you respond to a knockout that ultimately sets you apart from the rest.

It was all quite gentlemanly until Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko stepped into the North West London boxing ring for a fight that will go down in heavyweight history. Refreshingly respectful fighting talk and tactics before any punch was thrown gave us a humane feel for these two warriors who once sparred together and set an intriguing tone without any nonsense or towel of surrender thrown in.

At most, 12 rounds of boxing were on the cards and in the 11th round ‘It Was All a Dream.’ A dream conclusion for Anthony Joshua and a valiant effort from Wladimir Klitschko who at 41 proved, without a doubt, that age is just a number. After all those painful rounds, there are two which summed up what it means to focus, breathe and compose yourself when you’ve been stunned by a punch you didn’t see coming or left yourself open to.

Joshua was floored in the 6th and every heart in the UK was pounding with intensity to the point where I could hear yours and you could hear mine but what followed was nothing short of inspirational and impressive. Lessons in composure, how to breathe, focus and steady ourselves were on display in the 7th and 8th rounds by  the ‘Young Lion’ enabling him to realign with his ultimate goal. Most of us find this a hard task in a room on our own; not in front of a crowd of 90,000 spectators and the millions watching around the world.

And so, Anthony Joshua answered his critics in emphatic style with heroic methods but in truth, the only person he had to answer to was himself. My definition of a champion.

So You Think You’re Ugly? Look Again!

So you think you’re ugly? Most of us do at some point in our lives and it seems age doesn’t really matter when you feel this way which is why I was guided to this video. A video which reminded me how I felt as a girl and adolescent. I could never take a compliment, could never look someone in the eye when they paid me one, didn’t believe them when they told me I was pretty and would always reply by saying, “No I’m not”.

The struggles of a Greek girl were real though! The mono-brow I wasn’t allowed to pluck and a hairy top lip, ginger in appearance after my cousins introduced me to bleaching; what a stunner!

The struggle still goes on but it is a little different. When a medical problem challenges you by changing the way you look even slightly, you have to find once more, the confidence to say ‘thank you’ after a compliment which you know deep inside to be honest and true.

I recently became the proud owner of a wonky eye, this is what I call it because I have to turn every hurdle into a joke and find that self-deprecation is my only medicine. It’s a coping mechanism which my friends and family know all too well. Luckily, I know my worth, wonky eye or no wonky eye I can still see out of it which is all that really matters and I am well past worrying about what others see when they look at me. What other people think of me is their business, not mine.

Living With Yourself – Will You Tap Your Feet to Life’s Music?

Researching for clients and friends is one of my favorite things to do. It allows me to understand who they are on a deeper level and what makes them tick. These searches are usually positive and help me expand my knowledge of topics I know very little about and introduce me to unfamiliar worlds. However, there have been times when finding the unexpected turns my brain cells into emotional mush instead of mindful magic.

You are crazy if you think you can hide everything on the internet and deluded if your ego persuades you that nothing will ever be found. The power behind someones finger tips as they write their story or profile can breathe life into you or knock it out like a heavy-weight punch! What is inevitably unearthed can make or break you (if you allow it) and not for the first time, the universe and stars that twinkle from it, grouped together with a celestial lesson for me to learn; this time in the form of a phenomenal woman who reached 102 years of age, just a year older than my Grandmother who passed at the age of 101.

When I reach a grand old age (I believe that I will) will I look back on my life with a smile on my face? A wonderful life that I would want to re-live again and tap my feet to its beautiful music? And, the question that is unshakable in my mind;

“Was I able to live with myself?”

The Power of The Father – Your Rock!

It’s Good Friday and I’m home alone anticipating an afternoon of snacking and biblical film watching. Biblical films may not bring warmth to everyone’s crib, heart or mind but I like them; I always have. I flick the channels in the hope of seeing Charlton Heston win a bloody chariot race when I come across another man who is just as impressive and bold. The Rock may not be a cinematic legend to all film junkies but I couldn’t help but be drawn into his charmingly enticing film ‘The Game Plan’.

Essentially, this is a film about The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) building a once lost relationship with his daughter and how he teaches her to be strong and never give up without trying her best. Very funny in parts and emotional in others, I grabbed the tissue box more than once. It got me thinking how important fathers are and the role they have which can be dismissed or not recognised as an intrinsic part of a son or daughters evolving life.

Whom ever coined the phrase, ‘be careful what you wish for’ really knew what they were talking about and my wish to watch a story about a father wasn’t exactly what I was expecting but its underlying message was just as important. We all know the worth of mothers and the bond that developes from the womb but I do feel that fathers are left a little to one side once their baby making duties are fulfilled.

It’s true that some are useless, absolutely useless in fact and I have seen at first hand the damage they cause because they are not ready to change, even for a life that they created. I have to say that I have experienced this type of father so when I see others who are totally committed to their children yet receive no mention, I feel it is time for them to be put on as high a pedestal as all mothers are.

The lessons, values and life-skills a father can teach their child are immeasurable and the time they spend doing so builds a special relationship which not only enhances a child’s confidence but also makes them aware that they are loved unconditionally without prejudice or judgement. Always there, always patient, knowing that their duty is to create grounded and self-assured adults.

With so many temptations and outside forces like the evil child catcher ready to pounce, a fathers role is more important now than ever before. Not all couples who create future generations make it, this is no excuse for a father to be any less involved. Stepping up, even on the hostile ground of a break-up really separates the men from the boys.

No parent should find themselves praying for the souls of their children, no parent should see their child in darkness and no child should suffer because of the sins of their father. Thanks to a wrestle mania giant, believe it or not, there was one message from ‘The Game Plan’ which stuck out further than his biceps; you man up not give up!
